Provider Abstraction

Provider abstraction gives AI SDK Core a common interface for working with models from different providers. It lets applications use the same API while switching among provider integrations more easily.

How it works

Provider abstraction gives AI SDK Core a standardized language-model interface, hiding provider-specific API differences. Application code can use the same Core operations while selecting models from different providers, making provider changes simpler and reducing vendor lock-in.

Syntax

import { generateText } from 'ai';
import { openai } from '@ai-sdk/openai';

generateText({ model: openai('model-id'), prompt: '...' });

Key points

  • AI SDK Core standardizes how application code interacts with large language models.
  • Provider-specific API differences are hidden behind the common language-model interface.
  • Changing providers can require changing the selected model rather than rewriting Core integration logic.
  • The same AI SDK API is used across supported providers.
  • The abstraction supports a broad ecosystem of provider integrations and their models.

Common mistakes

  • A provider is the company or service exposing one or more language models; do not confuse the provider with an individual model.
  • The abstraction is a specification-based interface, so provider implementations must conform to that interface.

Example: Use a provider model through the unified interface

import { generateText } from 'ai';
import { openai } from '@ai-sdk/openai';

const result = await generateText({
  model: openai('gpt-4o'),
  prompt: 'Explain provider abstraction in one sentence.',
});

console.log(result.text);

The same AI SDK Core call can target a provider model through the standardized model interface.

When to use it

Reduce provider lock-in

Build an application that can move between model vendors without rewriting its AI SDK Core calls.

Unify model integrations

Use one application programming model for models exposed by multiple supported providers.

Create custom provider integrations

Implement or adopt a provider integration that conforms to the AI SDK language-model specification.

  • AI SDK Core
  • language model specification
  • AI SDK Providers
  • custom providers
