KINDE_CLIENT_ID

KINDE_CLIENT_ID is the environment variable for your Kinde application’s unique Client ID. Find it on the application details page and provide it to the SDK configuration.

How it works

KINDE_CLIENT_ID is an environment variable containing the unique identifier for your Kinde application. SDK configuration reads it alongside the Kinde domain, client secret, and callback URL when connecting an application to Kinde.

Syntax

KINDE_CLIENT_ID=<your_kinde_client_id>

Parameters

NameTypeDescription
KINDE_CLIENT_IDstringThe unique identifier of the Kinde application being connected.

Returns

The configured application Client ID is supplied to the Kinde SDK; this setting has no standalone runtime return value.

Key points

  • The value comes from the application’s details page in Kinde.
  • The variable stores the application’s Client ID, represented in the configuration example by a placeholder.
  • Kinde provides the Client ID and other application credentials in the dashboard.

Common mistakes

  • Use the Client ID belonging to the application being configured; do not substitute credentials from another application.

Example: Configure the Kinde client ID

KINDE_CLIENT_ID=your_kinde_client_id

Set the application’s Client ID in the environment before starting the app.

When to use it

Backend application setup

Configure a Kinde backend SDK using environment variables.

Application identification

Select the Kinde application associated with an integration.

Environment-based configuration

Keep application configuration separate from source code.

Interview questions

QWhat does KINDE_CLIENT_ID represent?

It is the environment variable used to provide an application’s unique Kinde identifier to the SDK. The value is obtained from the application’s details in Kinde.

Follow-up: Where should the value be sourced? From the application’s App keys section, where Kinde exposes the unique Client ID for that app.

QHow is KINDE_CLIENT_ID used in SDK configuration?

It identifies the Kinde application used by the integration. In the documented Ruby setup, it is configured together with KINDE_DOMAIN, KINDE_CLIENT_SECRET, and KINDE_CALLBACK_URL.

Follow-up: Which related setting is not always present? KINDE_CLIENT_SECRET applies to back-end and M2M apps, while the Client ID is listed for the application.

QWhere do you obtain the value?

Find it on the application’s Details page in Kinde and place that value in the environment configuration. The documented example uses the placeholder your_kinde_client_id.

Follow-up: How can you avoid selecting the wrong credential? Open the specific application you are connecting and copy its Client ID from App keys.
