Organizations

Organizations group Kinde users into business or tenant-like units such as companies or departments. Users may belong to multiple organizations, with roles and permissions that can differ by organization.

How it works

An organization is a Kinde tenant-like grouping for users, such as a company or department. Each organization has a unique org_code used by Kinde APIs and SDKs; users can belong to multiple organizations and have organization-specific roles and permissions.

Syntax

org_code

Key points

  • Organizations provide a boundary for grouping users, commonly representing a company, club, practice, or department.
  • Use org_code as the stable organization identifier in application and API integrations.
  • Membership is not exclusive: the same user can participate in several organizations.
  • Authorization can vary by organization for one user.
  • Kinde supplies a fallback organization for users whose organization is not identified.
  • Retrieve and retain the organization code when integrating Kinde developer tools.

Common mistakes

  • The default organization is not suspendable, unlike other organizations.

Example: Suspend an organization

const orgCode = "org_123";

const response = await fetch(
  `https://${process.env.KINDE_DOMAIN}/api/v1/organization/${orgCode}`,
  {
    method: "PATCH",
    headers: {
      Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.KINDE_ACCESS_TOKEN}`,
      "Content-Type": "application/json"
    },
    body: JSON.stringify({ is_suspended: true })
  }
);

if (!response.ok) throw new Error(await response.text());

Suspends an organization through the Kinde Management API using its unique organization code.

When to use it

Model tenants

A SaaS product serves multiple customer companies.

Support multi-organization membership

A user works with several customer accounts.

Apply organization-specific authorization

Access rules vary between business units.

Interview questions

QWhat is a Kinde organization?

Organizations group users for multi-tenant access control. A user may belong to several organizations, and their roles and permissions can differ in each one.

Follow-up: How should separate products be represented? Use separate Kinde businesses when the products require independent multi-tenant structures, because nested organization hierarchies are unsupported.

QHow do you identify an organization in Kinde?

The organization identifier is called org_code. It is unique per organization and is needed when using the Kinde API or SDKs.

Follow-up: How can an organization be suspended programmatically? Send a PATCH request to /api/v1/organization/{org_code} with the is_suspended field.

QWhat is special about the default organization?

Kinde provides a default organization when a business is created, and new users are placed there when no other organization is known. The default organization's name can be changed, but its unique code cannot.

Follow-up: Can the default organization be suspended? No; Kinde explicitly excludes it from organization suspension.
