Self-serve portal

Kinde’s self-serve portal lets authorized users and organization members manage configured account functions without contacting support. Configure its available capabilities, return URL, and permissions, then open it with a one-time link.

How it works

Kinde lets authenticated users open a configured self-serve portal through a one-time link. The portal exposes only the functions enabled for the audience, while access to individual capabilities is controlled by system permissions.

Syntax

portal()

Returns

A one-time portal URL, or a redirect to the portal when using an SDK helper.

Key points

  • The portal moves supported account-management tasks from your support team to customers.
  • For organizations, authorized members can manage business details, payment details, API keys, members and roles, and SSO enterprise connections when enabled.
  • Portal capabilities map to system permissions, allowing access to be controlled per function.
  • The portal can be configured separately for individual users and for organization members.
  • A return URL sends users back to the application after they leave the hosted portal.

Common mistakes

  • Portal links are single-use, so generate a fresh link whenever a user needs to enter the portal.
  • For an authenticated application, prefer generating the link with the user's access token rather than using an alternative flow.
  • Enabling a portal function for an organization does not by itself grant every member access; system roles still govern individual access.

Example: Open the self-serve portal

const portalUrl = await kindeClient.portal();
window.location.assign(portalUrl);

After portal configuration, call the authenticated JavaScript SDK helper to send the user to a one-time portal URL.

When to use it

Individual account self-management

Let customers update profile, billing, or payment information without building those screens in the application.

Organization administration

Allow organization administrators to maintain business details, members, roles, API keys, or billing settings.

In-app account navigation

Offer an Account or Profile button that opens Kinde-hosted management screens.

Interview questions

QWhat is Kinde’s self-serve portal?

The self-serve portal is a Kinde-hosted interface where users or organization members manage enabled account functions. It can cover profile, billing, API keys, organization members and roles, and other configured capabilities.

Follow-up: How would you prevent a member from using an enabled organization function? Keep the function enabled at the portal level, but restrict the member through the corresponding system role or permission.

QHow is the portal configured?

Configure it under Settings > Environment > Self-serve portal, set a return URL, choose the functions available to users or organization admins, and save. The selected options determine what appears in the portal.

Follow-up: What should change if only one organization needs different settings? Use the organization-specific Self-serve portal configuration and enable Override environment settings for that organization.

QHow does an application open the portal?

The portal is opened through a one-time URL. In an authenticated app, the JavaScript SDK exposes portal(), which redirects the signed-in user to the Kinde portal.

Follow-up: What alternative exists for server-side generation? Call POST /api/v1/portal/generate_url with an M2M token, then use the returned URL.

  • PortalLink
  • POST /api/v1/portal/generate_url
  • Return URL
  • Organization alias
  • org:write:billing
  • Self-serve portal for users
  • Self-serve portal for organizations
