What is the difference between Playwright and Cypress?

Both run end-to-end tests in real browsers. Playwright drives browsers from outside with multi-browser and multi-tab support; Cypress runs inside the browser with an interactive runner.

What each one is

Playwright

A Microsoft end-to-end testing framework for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.

Auto-waiting locators, parallel runs, multiple tabs and origins, traces and a built-in test runner.

Cypress

A JavaScript end-to-end and component testing tool that runs in the browser.

Time-travel debugging in an interactive runner, automatic retries and cy.intercept for network control.

The 10 most-asked difference questions

Subjective questions 10

1What is the main architectural difference between Playwright and Cypress?Asked almost every time

Playwright drives browsers from outside through browser automation protocols, controlling multiple pages, contexts and origins. Cypress runs your test code inside the browser alongside the app, which gives a rich interactive runner but limits some multi-tab and multi-origin scenarios.

2Which browsers do they support?Asked almost every time

Playwright tests Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, the engine behind Safari, from one API. Cypress supports Chromium-family browsers and Firefox, with WebKit support experimental.

3How does waiting work in each?Asked almost every time

Both avoid manual sleeps. Playwright locators auto-wait for elements to be actionable and web-first assertions retry until they pass. Cypress commands and assertions retry automatically until a timeout.

4When would you choose Playwright?Asked almost every time

For cross-browser coverage including Safari's engine, tests needing multiple tabs, origins or users at once, free built-in parallelism and sharding, and teams writing tests in Python, Java or .NET as well as TypeScript.

5When would you choose Cypress?Asked almost every time

For teams that value its interactive runner with time-travel snapshots, fast feedback while developing front-end features, strong component testing and an established ecosystem of plugins.

6How do locators and selectors differ?Very often asked

Playwright encourages user-facing locators such as getByRole, getByLabel and getByText that auto-wait. Cypress uses cy.get with selectors and cy.contains, with Testing Library commands available as a plugin.

7How is network mocking done?Very often asked

Playwright uses page.route to intercept and fulfil or modify requests. Cypress uses cy.intercept to stub responses, wait on aliases and assert on requests.

8How do they handle parallel runs?Very often asked

Playwright runs tests in parallel workers and shards across machines for free. Cypress parallelism across machines is typically through Cypress Cloud or by splitting specs in CI.

9How does debugging differ?Very often asked

Playwright has the trace viewer with DOM snapshots, network and console per step, UI mode and the inspector. Cypress has the interactive runner showing each command with time-travel DOM snapshots.

10How do they handle authentication in tests?Very often asked

Playwright saves logged-in storage state once in a setup project and reuses it across tests. Cypress uses cy.session to cache and restore login sessions between tests.
