Python & data
Python is a general-purpose language strong in data science, AI and scripting; JavaScript is the language of the web, running in browsers and on servers with Node.js.

Python is a general-purpose language valued for readability and a deep ecosystem in data, AI and automation. JavaScript is the language browsers run natively, and with Node.js it also runs on servers. Both are dynamically typed, but they differ in where they run by default, how they handle concurrency and which libraries surround them.
Choose Python when the core of the work is data analysis, machine learning, scientific computing or automation scripts. Libraries like pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn and PyTorch have no equally mature JavaScript equivalents. Python is also a solid backend choice with Django or FastAPI.
Choose JavaScript when you build anything that runs in the browser, because it is the only language browsers execute natively besides WebAssembly. It also fits teams that want one language across front end and back end using Node.js, React and Next.js, and real-time apps that benefit from the event loop.
JavaScript runs your code on a single thread with an event loop, and async/await handles non-blocking I/O by default. Python offers asyncio for async I/O, threads that are limited by the GIL for CPU work, and multiprocessing for true parallelism. In Python you choose a model; in JavaScript the event loop is always there.
The Global Interpreter Lock in standard CPython lets only one thread execute Python bytecode at a time, so threads do not speed up CPU-bound Python code. JavaScript has no GIL, but each runtime instance runs your code on one thread anyway. For parallel CPU work, Python uses processes and JavaScript uses worker threads.
Both are dynamically typed at runtime. Python has built-in optional type hints that tools like mypy or Pyright check, while the interpreter ignores them. JavaScript has no type syntax; teams use TypeScript, a superset that compiles to JavaScript and checks types at build time.
For plain code, JavaScript on V8 is usually much faster than CPython because V8 uses a JIT compiler. Python closes the gap when heavy work runs inside C-backed libraries like NumPy or PyTorch. For I/O-bound web services, both are usually limited by the database and network, not the language.
JavaScript's == performs type coercion, so 0 == '' is true, which is why teams use === for strict equality. Python's == compares values without loose coercion between strings and numbers, and is checks object identity. A common bug is using Python's is to compare strings or numbers.
JavaScript has block scope with let and const, while older var is function-scoped and hoisted. Python has function-level scope following LEGB: local, enclosing, global, built-in, so variables in an if or for block remain visible after it. Python needs global or nonlocal to rebind outer variables.
Python int has arbitrary precision, so very large integers never overflow, and float is a 64-bit double. JavaScript Number is always a 64-bit double, so integers are exact only up to 2^53 - 1; BigInt handles larger values. For money, use Decimal in Python and integer paise or a decimal library in JavaScript.
