What you will learn
  1. CodePipeline orchestrates stages while CodeDeployToECS actually performs the blue/green traffic shift.
  2. A green task set gets its own target group so you can test it before any customer traffic touches it.
  3. Automatic rollback on stage failure is a checkbox, but real safety comes from CloudWatch alarms wired to the deployment group.
  4. Stopping a deployment is not the same as rolling it back, confusing the two leaves your service half-shifted.
  5. ECS-native blue/green uses UpdateService and listener-rule weights, a different mechanism from CodeDeploy's CreateDeployment.

3:47 AM: The Release Nobody Had To Firefight

It was a Diwali-week release for a ticketing platform, the kind of deploy everyone dreads because traffic triples overnight. The on-call engineer pushed a new image tag, watched the pipeline kick off, and went to refill her chai. Four minutes later a CloudWatch alarm fired on elevated 5xx rates from the new task set, and by the time she was back at her desk the service was already serving 100 percent of traffic from the old revision again.

Nobody paged anyone. No war room, no frantic kubectl rollout undo equivalent, no stakeholder Slack thread asking what happened. The pipeline had done exactly what it was configured to do: stand up a replacement environment, test it, catch the failure, and walk traffic back to the known-good version.
