What you will learn
  1. jest.fn records calls and can return controlled values.
  2. jest.mock replaces whole modules; mock at boundaries only.
  3. Fake timers make time-based code deterministic.

Mocks are a scalpel

Mocking makes tests fast and deterministic by replacing slow or unpredictable dependencies. Overused, it produces tests that pass while the real code is broken, because the test only checks your assumptions about the mock.

The rule of thumb: mock at system boundaries (network, clock, randomness, third-party SDKs), not your own logic.
