Learning Objectives & Key Takeaways
0 / 4 Completed- Understand System Design core architecture and runtime execution model
- Audit real-world latency, throughput benchmarks, and memory footprint
- Implement zero-downtime deployment patterns with resilience guards
- Verify code snippets and architect blueprints against production SLOs
- Managed transcoding services separate prepare, transcode, and package phases automatically.
- Cloud Storage and Amazon S3 act as the durable handoff point between upload and transcoding.
- Job submission is asynchronous, so you must poll or subscribe to events instead of assuming completion.
- Presets like preset/web-hd require both an audio and a video track in the source file.
- EventBridge plus SNS lets you react to STATUS_UPDATE and COMPLETE events without polling MediaConvert.
The Upload That Took Down Our Encoding Fleet
At a wedding-video platform I worked with, creators upload raw 4K footage straight from camera cards, often 30 to 40 gigabytes per file. The backend ran a fleet of EC2 workers polling a queue, each one shelling out to ffmpeg to produce 720p and 360p renditions. On a normal Tuesday this worked fine, but one Saturday a wedding season surge pushed hundreds of these large files through the queue within an hour.
Disk IO on the worker instances saturated first, then memory pressure triggered OOM kills mid-encode, and partially written output files sat in storage looking like valid renditions. Nobody noticed until the backlog hit fourteen hours and support tickets started asking why uploaded videos never appeared in the gallery. The team had no job-level visibility, only process logs scattered across instances that had already been recycled by the auto-scaler.
