What you will learn
- With the AI SDK, a plain 'provider/model' string routes through the gateway.
- One key and one bill cover many providers.
- Usage, latency and errors are visible per model.
The problem with one SDK per provider
Shipping AI features usually starts with one provider's SDK. Then you want a cheaper model for summaries, a faster one for autocomplete, and a backup during an outage, and suddenly you maintain three integrations.
The AI Gateway sits between your app and the providers. The AI SDK talks to it by default when you pass a model as a string, so switching models is editing that string.
