What you will learn
  1. EXPLAIN ANALYZE shows what the database actually did and how long it took.
  2. B-tree indexes serve equality, ranges and sorting; GIN serves arrays, JSON and full text.
  3. Composite index column order must match how you filter.

The query that was fast last month

Most database slowdowns are not mysterious. A table grows, a query that once scanned a thousand rows now scans a million, and pages that took 50 ms take five seconds.

The fix is usually an index, but the right index depends on exactly how the query filters and sorts. Guessing adds indexes that cost writes and never get used.
