What you will learn
  1. Actions and useActionState let React manage pending and error state instead of manual useState flags.
  2. useOptimistic shows an expected result instantly, then React reverts it if the request fails.
  3. Function components can now accept ref as a plain prop, so forwardRef is rarely needed for new code.
  4. The use() hook reads promises and context during render and can be called conditionally, unlike other hooks.
  5. The React Compiler runs first in the Babel pipeline and targets React 19 by default, with no config needed.

The 2 AM Page: A Button Click That Charged a Customer Twice

A payments team at a Bengaluru fintech got paged at 2 AM because a customer's card was charged twice for a single order. The checkout button used a classic useState pair, isSubmitting and error, toggled by hand inside an onClick handler. On a slow connection in Jaipur, the user tapped the button twice before the spinner rendered, and both clicks fired the mutation before isSubmitting flipped to true.

The root cause was not bad code by React standards, it was a timing gap that every manually written submit handler has. React itself did not know an async action was in flight, so it could not block a second render from firing the same handler. The team patched it with a ref based lock that worked, but it was fragile and nobody on the team trusted it enough to reuse it elsewhere.

  2. useOptimistic: Instant Feedback Without Lying to the Server
  3. ref as a Prop: Deleting forwardRef From the Codebase
  4. use(): Reading Promises and Context Without the Hook Rules
  5. Turning On the React Compiler Without Breaking Production
