What you will learn
  1. Query by role and label first, the way users and screen readers find things.
  2. userEvent simulates real interactions, including focus and typing.
  3. findBy queries wait for async UI.

The guiding principle

Tests that inspect state or internal methods break whenever you refactor, even when users notice nothing. React Testing Library pushes you to test through the rendered DOM, the way a user interacts.

A useful side effect: if an element is hard to query by role or label, it is probably not accessible either.
