What you will learn
  1. Cache-aside with TTLs is the default caching pattern.
  2. SET with NX and an expiry gives a simple lock.
  3. INCR with EXPIRE implements fixed-window rate limits.

More than a cache

Redis is an in-memory data store with rich data structures: strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets and streams. That makes it useful far beyond caching: sessions, leaderboards, queues, locks and rate limits.

Its speed comes from memory and simple operations, so the design question is always what happens when Redis is unavailable or the data is lost.

In the rest of this story
  1. Three core patterns
  2. Cache-aside with a stampede guard
  3. Failure modes to plan for
