What you will learn
- Static checks catch typos and type errors for free.
- Integration tests give the most confidence per minute.
- A few end-to-end tests guard the money paths.
More tests is not the goal
A thousand unit tests that mock everything can pass while the app is broken. A suite of slow end-to-end tests can take an hour and fail randomly. The goal is confidence that the product works, at a cost the team can sustain.
The testing trophy describes a balance: a wide base of static checks, many integration tests, fewer unit tests for tricky logic, and a thin top of end-to-end tests.
