Learning Objectives & Key Takeaways
0 / 4 Completed- Understand Kubernetes & Docker core architecture and runtime execution model
- Audit real-world latency, throughput benchmarks, and memory footprint
- Implement zero-downtime deployment patterns with resilience guards
- Verify code snippets and architect blueprints against production SLOs
- StatefulSets give you stable identity and storage, but zero domain knowledge about failover or backups
- Operators encode operational runbooks into controllers that watch and reconcile custom resources continuously
- Running Postgres or Kafka without an operator means your on call engineer becomes the reconciliation loop
The Incident: A StatefulSet Is Not a Database Administrator
It was 2 AM when the primary Postgres pod in our payments cluster got evicted during a node drain. The StatefulSet dutifully rescheduled it on a new node, reattached the same persistent volume claim, and brought the pod back healthy within ninety seconds.
There was just one problem. During those ninety seconds, two read replicas kept pointing at the old primary's stale connection string cached in their recovery configuration, and nothing in Kubernetes told them the primary had moved. Writes silently failed at the application layer for four minutes before anyone noticed.
