What you will learn
  1. Compose Bridge turns a resolved compose.yaml into Kubernetes manifests, not a production deployment plan.
  2. docker compose config produces the canonical model that any custom transformation should consume.
  3. Default output targets Docker Desktop, so hostpath PersistentVolumeClaims and LoadBalancer Services need review before production.
  4. Custom transformation templates let platform teams bake in resource limits, security contexts, and labels once.
  5. Treat kubectl apply -k out/overlays/desktop/ as a local testing step, never a production runbook.

The Demo That Broke Two Days Before Launch

Our staging environment had run the same five-service Compose stack for months without a single incident, so when the client asked for a Kubernetes demo we treated it as a formality. Someone on the team ran the official conversion command, got a folder full of YAML, applied it, and the dashboard loaded. Everyone relaxed, closed their laptops, and scheduled the real demo for two days later.

The second time we applied those same manifests, this time against a shared staging cluster instead of Docker Desktop, three services came up with no storage, the public port never got an external address, and two containers restarted in a loop because they had no memory ceiling and got evicted. Nothing about the Compose file had changed. What changed was the assumption that a converted file equals a cluster-ready file.
